Aleister Crowley animation [18 Jun 2009|10:57am]
[ music | Prince - The Beautiful Ones ]

The Aleister Crowley-inspired "biopic" animation I made for school a few weeks ago. Aleister Crowley was a goat-molesting satanist who once caused a man to die because he insisted he should drink cat blood. Mussolini thought Al was so bad he banned him from Italy. Oh, and Jimmy Page was sort of in love with him. The film's a huge huge GIF instead of a reasonable format, don't ask why. Allow a few years to load.

Infected [08 May 2009|11:48pm]
[ music | Celine Dion - Ziggy ]

These drawings were inspired by the injury I inflicted on my right knee after tripping stupidly on the pavement. A bunch of pebbles got stuck in the wound and after a few days it got infected. It stunk, was filled with yellow sluffy stuff, and looked bubbly.

I took antibiotics for two weeks and had to have a nurse clean the wound and change the dressing every 4 days for a month. This meant I could only really look at the wound once a week - and every time I did, it completely fascinated me. Bugs were living inside my knee and feeding off of me! And they somehow would grow if my knee came in contact with water! And antibiotics somehow killed them! What the fuck! Being a bacteria host, I felt unclean constantly for that whole month. But for the first time I felt like I started to kind of understand why anyone would ever want to go into medicine and see gross wounds and stuff all the time. Because it's just TOTALLY INTERESTING, d00dz.

Photographs can't really do the amazingness of disgusting stuff like infected wounds justice. So I drew a super-enhanced version of my fucked-up knee, and threw in my idea of what an infected chest wound might have looked like.

Oh and I made a website for the costume project! Click the wee lil' screen dumpling to get to it.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: I need to make an animation and I don't want to make a stop motion one. Which programmes are the easiest? And do you have any general practical advice?

Little Kim (2009) [29 Mar 2009|04:40am]

This is the picture I made for my tattoo artist in exchange for my tattoo. He said he wanted something similar to Dormez-vous? and I happily obliged. It's Kim Kardashian - everyone's favorite Pussycat Doll - as a young child.

I love making these kinds of portraits so much; just people surrounded by random things.

Readers of this blog, commission me for portraits! Or any other drawing you'd like. Comment with your email in case you're interested. Or email me at miriam.ivanoff@gmail.com.

Sketchbook stuff [27 Mar 2009|08:29pm]
[ music | No Doubt - Sixteen ]

These collages are some of the results of trying to utilize all the magazine cut-outs I've saved over the year. Drawing stuff often makes me feel uncomfortably introspective, but making collages feels more frivolous. Like I'm putting an outfit together or something. More superficial and therefore more calming and therefore, paradoxically, more theraputic.

A nice flat [27 Mar 2009|08:04pm]
[ music | Al Green - So you're leaving ]

Tried to draw a Swedish friend's apartment from memory to cheer myself up about the horrendous living conditions in London. I've heard that the only place worse than London is Paris; flats are even more expensive, cold, and tiny. Knowing that everything is 10,000 times better in Sweden for some reason makes me a little happier. Only 1 more year of England, then I'm doing my third year in Germany/Spain/France, and then, in 2012, I'm finally going back to bearable standards of living.

Costume project [04 Mar 2009|12:41am]

So, I crocheted a turtleneck with three necks and six sleeves, made matching hot pants, and went out into the woods and made a stop motion animation with four other people in costumes of their own design.

This is my costume. I made it in 4 days, and then accessorized it with a hat I found in a Hasidic hat shop, pink tights, pink socks, and pink gloves, and shoes from Clark's (NOTE THE SUBTLE PRODUCT PLACEMENT THERE, FUTURE SPONSORS?).

And this is the animation.

"Don't speak", 2008 [07 Feb 2009|08:15pm]
[ music | Nouvelle Vague - Just can't get enough ]

This was somewhat inspired by that scene in The Matrix where the agents "lock" Neo's mouth. The skin looks the way it does because I wanted the guy to look sick, cold, poor and English. I used markers, ink, and color pencil on white paper and colored paper.
